When you have kids at home, you can’t help but wonder almost all the time about what they are doing and if they are safe, especially if you are not looking after them. Kids are more concerned with pleasure than safety, thus you must ensure that your home is safe. After all, it will be your responsibility to clean up their messes and nurse their injuries when things go wrong.
One of the items you can consider is the sofas. Kids love to play on sofas while in the house and they do not know how to keep them clean. They will spill drinks on them, drop food items and sit on them with dirty clothes, and step on them with dirty feet or shoes. No matter how many times you advise them otherwise, it always happens. What you can do to make them enjoy and reduce your stress levels at the same time is to invest in good quality leather couches that are easy to clean and sturdy. If you have to choose slip covered sofas, then look for stain resistant fabric that will be easy to clean as well.
The other thing to also consider is your coffee table and cupboards. Avoid buying sharp edged furniture for your home, especially when you have kids who are learning how to walk. The sharp edges of furniture can cause serious injuries if someone hits themselves against them, and they are quite painful. Instead, purchase round and oval shaped tables and have them cushioned if you can to make them dull, and cupboards with blunted edges. This way, if your kids get very rough, the risk for injuries will be less. Keep off cupboards because they can easily fall on your kids, but if you have to buy them, make sure they are very heavy and installed in rooms where kids do not frequent.
The type of floor you select is also essential. The most suitable type of floor to have when you have kids is one which is slip resistant, easy to clean, and warm. Hardwood floors are easy to clean, but very slippery especially when one has socks on. Concrete floors are also easy to clean, but can get very cold and freeze your little ones’ feet. Try carpet tiles because they are easy to clean, slip resistant, and warm on the feet.
Your walls are also another source of stress with young kids around, especially those at the crayons stage. But, you can coat your walls with an easy to clean type of paint in areas where the kids frequent a lot or install chalkboards on the walls to make both you and your kids happy. Again, it doesn’t matter how many times you tell your kids not to do stuff, they will always find a way to annoy you. Be wise!
